A weekend being French

... with baguettes, the only bakery we found was closed. Instead we had this potent cheese that we had to throw out, some not so nice salami and a supermarket croissant which was good by normal standards (amazing by Vietnamese standards), be we knew we would find better.
After lunch and a sleep in the first double bed we had slept on since throwing out our blow up mattress at T in the Park we forced ourselves out of the hotel and went to visit the Louvre. We ...

Day 4 - Enough Art Already!!! Let's Go Shopping

... taking night photos because there was nothing to brace the camera against and it was very windy. Most of them came out very blurry. I also took some video to try to capture how the 12 streets (including the Champs Elysees) spread out from the Arc. We took a bus down the Champs Elysees looking at all the lights and stores. We had to change buses near the Place de la Concorde (where the Obelisk is) which gave us some more blurry photo ops. Still very beautiful.

... body of Napoléon in 1840, from St. Helena. On 8 October 1840 - 19 years after the death of the Emperor - the coffin was exhumed. On 15 December 1840 a state funeral was held, and despite a winter snowstorm, the hearse proceeded from the Arc de Triomphe down the Champs-Elysées, across the Place de la Concorde to the Esplanade and finally to the cupola in St Jerome's Chapel until the tomb was completed. On 3 April 1861 Napoléon I came ...

... when Prussia tried to invade, and was built entirely out of donations. The stone used is called Travertine, which is unusual in that when it gets wet, it draws out the calcite in the stone, which means that it self-cleans and the more rain it gets, the whiter the stone gets. For all the tofs people playing along, theres something to spiel to the customers when your trying to sell those travertine tables. I recon Tony owes me some payout for that handy piece ...

... i guess. Just alot of history. After the museum we walked around amsterdam for a few hours, just wandering around and taking in the city, and doing some shopping. We decided to have a picnic in the park outside of the rijksmuseum. we did have some difficulty finding a bakery and cheese place, but then we found both right next to each other! We had our lunch and relaxed for a while. we had planned on going to the rijksmuseum at night, but then we found out it was a ...

... lift each other up. I have also noticed that some things seem universal: -nodding and smiling will get you far and communicate plenty when needed -kids cry and pout for silly reasons (but when the French do, it seems less annoying) -no one likes stepping in dog poo (some very large dog left his behind on an escalator and it was just turning over and over again at the bottom, horrible sight, everyone was jumping out of the way like it was a cobra) - products promising ...

We'll Always Have Paris

... Illuminations Tour (Paris by night) and went up the iconic French monument, the Eiffel Tower. It was absolutely gorgeous! There is something so romantic and enchanting about the City of Lights and though I can't exactly put my finger on what it is, I know I am head over heels in love with this city. I intend on moving here for 2-3 yrs after graduate school and freelancing for a French magazine. This place is thrilling, not only culturally with all the fantastic art museums but it has ...

... first 2 years of working... something like that anyway. So they want that law changed. Some guy stopped us on the way out... tried talking about who-knows-what, I think he was just weird. When he started trying to take pictures of me, that's when we left. Charlotte and I got a crepe and went back home. It seems like people are always striking about something. I haven't been here long enough to see if its effective.

Shedding light on the City of Light

... I was still acting as a tour guide, I was behaving like a stop-at-nothing tourist trying to cram in those vital travel experiences into the duration of our stay there. Since it is now the summer of 2009, I am having to cast my mind back a whole 4 years to reflect upon this experience, but on the whole, the memories of this stay in Paris are still comparatively fresh in my mind. Discoveries for myself include the ...
