Flight of the Condor

... streets - serving great fresh orange (for Kevin) and Prosecco for me!!! Bliss. Booked out on the next available flight - which was to Madrid and booked a cheap aparthotel for the night before flying on somewhere warm.

It just coincidentally took us to Lanzarote, which we know and love and we thought, what the heck, let's just go and chill out there till the dollars run out!

The Eagle has landed

We landed bang on time in Cagliari. The warm air was lovely and the three of us felt so excited; we had met up with Bradley Mullen at Luton just as we were boarding, so were able to travel together and share our excitement.

Mike was there to collect us from the airport, we were in his car packed high with bags and two massive cases between Kevin and I in the back. Wow.

Second Last stop....

... I had a realisation. A kind of Epiphany if you want to talk in Buffy and Angel speak.

After seeing that Australian girl on the boat and meeting a lot of 18 year old travelers over the past week or 2 it has become clear to me that I am as Danny Glover would say “Too old for this S*#t” Well not for traveling. That is something that I believe people of all ages should do. But, I think I am too old to be traveling for the sake of traveling. I.e. A ...

We’d driven around really slowly today, just mooching around – by the time we arrive back at the monastery there is an hour of evening sun to enjoy before we go off in search of the elusive sunset photo. The sunset seems to have been obscured by clouds the last few nights and tonight was no different. We sit watching the sun go down again, eating our picnic here for the last time.

... the monastery. They were totally unaware that everything shuts here between 1pm and 4pm, so they’d spent the morning looking round the town thinking that they’d hire a car in the afternoon and if all else failed catch the bus back at 4pm, but then found themselves in a complete ghost town for 3 hours with nothing to do – oh dear!

We read for an hour, then drove to see the sun set. Afterwards we found somewhere to have dinner and made our way back.

City under the sea

... beauty of its own. We found our way onto a dirt track again and pulled up into a bay where we sat and read and watched the sea in silence.

When we decide to make our way back we stop at the supermarket for more picnic supplies. The sun goes down around 7.30pm at the moment here and we were close to an area near the monastery where you can get down to the sea, so we sat there and ate our picnic and watched the sun go down.

... and the quarry itself, which is right beside the sea. We sit on some rocks for a while just listening to the sea and then investigate. I see a path up onto the cliff which seems to lead closer to the lighthouse – which is out on an island of its own. It’s crazy hot today, so the climb up leaves us sweating and thirsty, but the views from the top are worth every second. The lighthouse is much closer now, but once again we are thwarted as there are ...

First stops in Sardinia

Hello from Sardinia. We arrived safe and sound after our Ryan Air debacle. We landed in Cagliari which is the largest town in Sardinia and located at the southern most point of the island. We rented a car and started driving clockwise around the island. First surprise- there are Flamingos all over the southwest part of this island! Who knew? Anyway, we drove northwest along the coast and took a ferry from the island of Sardinia to an ever smaller island called Isola di ...

Diversity of the italian landscape

I went to Sardegna for 10 days in August to 'help' with an ADRA community program in Carbonia which was a fairly low SES town. We slept on mattresses in the local football stadium rooms. A fairly dry and nearly ghost like town near I think some coal mines. I felt a bit useless not being able to communicate that well in Italian, but we visited and helped out patients in the local hospital.  There didn't seem to be such a thing as PCA's or orderlies in the hospital and many family members ...

... a 20ft pilot whale which surfaced right by the boat a few times (maybe he fancied her fat ****). On sighting Portoscuso we saw the smoking chimneys of the aluminium smelting works all along the coastline and the marina seemed to be in the middle of them. However, on arrival it proved to be a pleasantly sleepy little town. We arrived at 10.30 AM on Tuesday knackered, mildly embarrassed and pleased that, at sea, only the dolphins can hear you scream.
