... our lunch and were delighted to be joined by another orangutan and 2 year old baby. The guides set up lunch and ensured we were safe and they kept their distance, we spent a good couple of hours sharing their space and their antics while we all took a million pictures... wow an incredible close encounter with these fantastic animals, we were so lucky!

Our guide told us that the monument was first built after the independence from Japan and destroyed in the years between the independence from Japan and the final independence in December 1949. The destruction of the monument had a negative impact on the population of the city, and was rebuilt in 1951 by the first president of the country.

... The guesthouse looks new. We only have cold water which seems to be the norm here. For our second night they had a fantastic room for 250,000 it’s on the top floor. Pictures below, you notice I didn’t take any of Batu Mandi. Really I didn’t want to waste my camera battery.

... very lost and uncomfortable with all the unwanted attention....where are all the tourists/westerners?!! Whilst I was trying to converse with a lady at the train station a Malaysian tour guide, who spoke very good English, rescued me. His plan was to stay in Medan one night with a number of his group,and wait for the rest to arrive the following day...he offered to take me to the city and help me get a cab (it turned out no one would take me to Parapat), he then took us ...
