An early 7:00am start although we were awoken by roosters and fireworks around 5:30am. Our first stop was a quaint town Chichicastenango nestled like many of the towns in a valley surrounded by mountains. It has this historic hybrid St Thomas Catholic Church built in 1540 with quite significant woodwork and frescoes. Because the Mayans like lighting candles the frescoes and gold ...

It was founded after mudslides and flooding destroyed the country’s first capital, in what is today Ciudad Vieja, in 1541. We were picked up at 6AM and driven to Pacaya Volcano, which is located near Antigua and is very active, with its most recent eruption taking place just 7 months ago. That last eruption was a small ash eruption that didn't cause much damage at all, but in 2010 there was a much larger eruption, which left ash many feet higher than usual. Our ...

Our first day of volunteering was great. We started a beautification project of painting a wall of the school for children living in the dump/ landfill area. We then hung out and played with the children who loved being with us. There were smiles, serious looks and looks of sadness in their faces. One little boy had a black eye. I have posted a few photos which are worth a thousand ...

... Rainbow Cafe for dinner, it was a great night. Food, drinking and entertainment were all been great including the company. Thomas introduced me to a new game called 'Nervous'. Basically the aim of the game is to put your hand on someone's leg and move it slowly up until they (or you) chicken out. It appears that Thomas has had some practise at that game, and doesn't tend to loose. We also went out ...
