My head is in a spin

... halt and kneel at the bottom of the sea fifteen metres under. We switch our torches off, suddenly it is pitch dark with just the sound of my breathing filling my senses. (How very Darth Vader, love it). Then by waving our arms, as if by magic, thousands of fluorescent tiny lights appear excited by the movement and they fill the water surrounding us, a truly moving experience for me.

Off to Peru Next...

Tourist Tat Part 2

After four days of tourist hell, we move to Cozumel for some peace. We don't find it. The streets are just as much of a gauntlet, its just as tacky and just as expensive. Again we decide to try diving and after speaking to a few dive shops go with EcoDivers, they seem pleasant in the shop and pricewise are very favourable. Big mistake. If Mexico Blue Dream is the best dive shop we’ve used yet, Eco Divers is the worst. We turn up and they ...

Tulum Ruins and Beach break tour

... back to the bus for lunch.

The bus took us further south from Tulum to a beach that contained some smaller hotels, restaurants and resorts with beach huts that you could stay in. We were served a Mexican smorgasbord for lunch and then spent some time swimming int he warm, blue water. The sand is snow white and the whole place was like a picture postcard.
We had to head back to the bus and make the hour trip back to Playa ...

Scuba Diving (I´m Not Great At Original Titles...)

... the drink-sleep-do nothing-drink cycle was beginning to get to me mentally and physically, and I had begun to feel a bit like I was married to Agostina, who was a bit clingy. But I had had a really good few days, and was ready and excited to go to Cozumel to do my diving. So after a number of farewells, I arrived here on the island yesterday afternoon. Cozumel is apparently one of the best places in the world to go diving, which is lucky because it doesn´t have much ...

Chichen Itza-Yucatan Peninsula - Cozumel - Mexico

... a walking encyclopedia of the Mayan History. He imparted a vast amount of knowledge both critical as well as frivolous ones with zeal. We're highly impressed with his knowledge. After making sure that he has not missed out any important facts, he left us to roam around freely. He also left us with admiration and a lasting impression ...

Start of Cozumel: bad end to Cancun

... I have no medical experience. Little Spanish. I take his head and look at his eye. 'Nick, you have to go to hospital.' My tour is starting at 11, I cannot go to hospital.' Apart from a very damaged eye, he has no shoes. The owner asks me again: que passa? I explain in my very ****** Spanish: this guy has to go to the hospital. I KNOW he is not going on any tours at 11 today or tomorrow. Someone gave him some Tylenol. It is like a band aid if your ...

Underwater Excitement

... After everyone else surfaced, they handed us fresh mangos and we all dug in. The warm juicy sweetness ran down my arm as I took a big bite after peeling it. How could so much liquid be packed into such a small space? I had gotten to talking so I was the last one done eating and it was almost time to go back in. We stopped at a shallow area where many of our group got to snorkel but they were a couple short so I didn't get to go in. I decided to hang my legs off the ...

Happy New Year´s from Cozumel

... hotel for only $18US. It ended up being much nicer than I expected. That night I met up with my brother´s friend and we passed an uneventful New Year´s overlooking the sea. Tomorrow I plan on going back to Playa del Carmen to catch a bus to Palenque, which is a town in the midst of the jungle. There´s supposed to be some amazing ruins and waterfalls to explore, as well as lots of mosquitos which are essentially immune to any insect repellant. Should be fun...

Chichen Itz and the Temple of Tulum

... 20 minute walk in the dark. Yesterday, fuelled by our drive to find a better deal we moved into Papaya Playa for better accomodation and food that only cost an arm and not the leg aswell. However after a the end of the day of absolutely nothing except eating and sleeping, we calculated our spend for the day and realised that we had come very close to going over budget simply just for living. Which leads us to today where Amber and I devised a plan to make our way back into ...
