... to do in Rishikesh that we wished we had. We didn't take any yoga classes and we didn't stay in an ashram (Sorry Grego!), but on the last day we made a serious effort to go and see the evening river prayer ceremony that occurs in Swarg Ashram every day. We thought we had found it, but it turned out to be just a regular bathing ghat (stone staircase leading into the river), and we hung out there for half an hour waiting for it to start. You can buy offerings at these ghats ...
Rishikesh, Uttarakhand, India mattarah... and came over and chased the cow away! I quickly said 'thank you' and ran up the hill to the safety of my room. One evening I realized that the diet had made me anti-social (I had rented a gas burner and ate all my rice in my room, either alone or with Lindsey, although I did occasionaly convince another student to join me for a meal of brown rice...they usually left unsatisfied, as most people would with a dinner of ONLY rice!) so I decided to venture out with my ...
Rishikesh, Uttarakhand, India courtenay... It is imminently worthwhile, whatever I had to go through at this particular facility. The practice only survived in its pure form in Burma. It is an incredibly focused technique, absolutely universal and non-sectarian. And it is given in simple and uniform in instruction at donation-only retreat centers all over the world. However simple the technique is, though, it is real work. This is no warm fuzzy, ecstatic form of meditation, but it makes up for that in ...
Dehradun, Uttarakhand, India globalgramma... the crowds, Rishikesh town sits along the quickly rising banks of the hillsides above the Ganga's alternately sandy and boulder strewn beaches and cliffs. In the busiest areas of town, large steps (ghats) lead to the Ganges. This is a city in love and at play with Mother Ganga. Old and poor women sit at the ghats, selling tiny leaf bowl arrangements of flowers, incense and burning camphor lamps to offer into the Ganga with your prayers. Young and old come and ...
Rishikesh, Uttarakhand, India schettino72... I left just after the intermission (at about 10:20 at night), and our auto-rickshaw driver was insane. He had no headlight or horn and went speeding through the dark streets as fast as the machine could go. We ran into another auto-rickshaw a few minutes into the ride and broke a metal piece off of it. After a short confrontation in which our driver played dumb and acted like ...
Dehradun, Uttarakhand, India adomingo4... actors' "where are they now"s, which I shared. Our guide had an amazing eye for animals, and even animal prints-he somehow spotted tiger pawprints in the mud, which was weirdly, very tangentially, exciting. I was glad to be on the bumpy bus with that amazing tour guide. The next day I was covered in welts from what must have been insect bites. Wouldn't it make more sense for the bites to hurt while they're being delivered?
