... The most sobering realization was just how similar these people were to us. Sure, there are obvious differences, but in reality we haven't come 'so far' in 2000 years. Tomorrow morning we catch a train for Sorrento. We will be there for 4 nights. We will take day trip to Amalfi, but we will not be staying at the hotel there. Joe and I decided that our stay on the Amalfi coast will be more enjoyable if we do not change hotels , so we extended our stay at the hotel in Sorrento, and cancelled the one in Amalfi. Just wanted to let everyone know in case you needed to reach us.

From Positano we did a couple of day trips to Capri, a small island about a 35 minute ferry ride of the coast and a trip to Pompeii to the ancient Roman ruins ...

... umbrella and raincoat got soaked through to our underwear! Next day it rained hard too but did not mind a lazy day with no sightseeing. The city of Naples has a few nice areas but is a really dirty city and one day of sightseeing was plenty. Seeing Naples and Mt. Vesuvius from a distance is the best way to see them but south of Naples and the Almafi coast is not to be missed.

... we entered a small grocer and purchased some wine to take back and enjoy in our cabin. We found that a bottle of wine cost 2 to 7 euros, which was a lot cheaper than a bottle of Italian Chianti or French Bordeaux at $35-40 USD in the dining room. We started off the day by taking a tour up Mt. Vesuvio! We even got to hike the last bit to the top. It was pretty barren up there, and the volcano was still smoking!! It was crazy to visit a place that I'd been learning about in history classes since I was a little girl. We were also supposed to visit Pompeii, but the buses were running late. ... reading a good book I picked up in the Naples hostel right now about a similar topic related to American tourism and media in the East. It's called "Video Night in Kathmandu," by Pico Iyer, and beside making me want to go to Indonesia, it points out the hypocrisy inherent in wanting to freeze a spot "as you remember it." Will give a final rating when I'm past the first essay, but, so far, it's spot on even though it was written twenty years ago.
