However, we are in modern times and as we reached the top of the hill, entered through some impressive columns, we sighted the Parthenon in all its scaffolded glory!! It was a bit of an anti climax! I guess the level of "wow ...
... We arrived soon after opening time but were disappointed to find six tour bus loads ahead of us! However, on leaving we counted more than thirty buses in the park, so guess we didn't do so badly after all. The acropolis overlooks the town of Lindos and the town looks so good because every spring the houses are whitewashed. There were dozens of donkeys ferrying tourists up and down the cobbled path to the acropolis, but the rest of us ...
... for us to try at the next location. Speaking of which, we arrived at the Klimataria Tavern, which is considered to be one of the oldest and popular tavernas in Athens. Maria, the owner, served us a tomato pie (with phyllo) that she had made. ... was across from the Athens Starbucks and gave me an authentic Greek experience!
So there you have it - Athens in a nutshell. The city is full of history, landmarks, Olympic legacy, and strange changing of the guard policies. Even though the city was not as clean as others, Athens still made me speechless with the Acropolis and Parthenon. It was definitely a date that I'd request an encore some day. Until then, Off to Turkey I Go!
... the Acropolis, and the excellent honey we’ve already tasted—at restaurant on a small square near our lodging where we had dinner tonight, where the owner, who spoke only okay English, valiantly translated the Greek-only menu for us--and where the food was fabulous.
We shall now crawl into bed and attempt to prepare for tomorrow--the Ancient Agora and the National Archeological Museum.
