... very delicious! In case we didn't like the Foie Gras, we also took some local cheese and a pot of pepper stuffed green olives....I'm telling you, a big effort was made by the Robinsons here! We could not find Montbazillac, which is apparently a sweet white wine so hedged our bets with a bottle each of red and white. We had picked up a South African red but put it back thinking we may get crucified by the French!

... Jewish synagogue and ritual bath that date back to the 12thC, a time before the Jews of Besalu were persecuted, ghettoized and eventually expelled. We were able to wander all around the town I impeded, as we were the only visitors around..not much going on there at this time of year, but lovely to see, nonetheless!

We were gob-smacked as we wandered through this Alice in Wonderland place, everywhere you looked there was something more to see, no amount of staring could take in all the detail. There were rooms devoted to his early works (rather normal-looking!), huge murals painted on walls, sculptures, models ...

... keep, the battlements, drawbridges, the royal suites, the parade grounds, all a warren of stone stairs, massive gates and towers. It was fascinating, all this on a high rock base surrounded on three sides by the bay. Jan loved the views and the shuttered faceted windows with stone window seats in the regal digs especially.
