... find a place to stay in Olinda without trying to arrive on a Saturday.

Had seen the powdery white sandy beach stretching on forever on the bus, with surf pounding so was more keen to stock the fridge, have a shower, siesta and wash my sweaty clothes, than head out in the blazing sun.

When I did emerge, found the strong breeze had kept the heat bearable but high tide meant waves crossing ...

Waited until after rush hour to head off and just missed one of the infrequent buses to Sao Felix – the next wasn't until 11.40 and given the 2 hour journey time, just seemed too much bus given my impending 12 hour trip tonight.

The tourist office suggestion would have been pleasant if I had been dressed for it and not in my big boots and heavy clothes, not ideal for walks in the sand. ...

... plants. We passed by refineries and saw tankers waiting off-shore, on our way to our first tourist stop in south Maceio. It was a stop filled with small shops selling local crafts. Dawn spent 2 reals on a colourful knotted thread bookmark that a cute little girl was selling. (She wanted to by a second design from the big brother but I had no change! Doh!) Further on we found a shop that sold all kinds of home decor items...kind of ...

... towns with one main street. After we had checked in we dumped our bags in the room and made our way to the beach. The coastline of Maceió is scattered with reefs, you can take a jangada (like a mini sailboat) about 1km from the shore to a reef with a 'sand platform' which you can stand on and swim around and even get drinks and food in the water. It is best to visit at low tide as the water only comes up to your waist and is clear. Unfortunately ...

... supermarket or the spanish potatoes from kake. Coconuts were cheap at the beach, about 4 reals and the girls wear almost nothing sometimes. But time was too short to do a lot. The only excursion was to barra de sao miguel, a nice town were some marathon or something took place. Just to find the right bus in the center of maceio took me about an hour. But there, the port was really nice, tiny beach and small barraca ...
