Pushkar 1 - 4 March 2009, plus Food and Drink item

Another overnight journey - but this is the last for some time. 1AC class on the train - which means a comfortable 4 birth cabin. Only problem ... arriving in Ajmer, which is a three quarter hour trip away from Pushkar, at 03h30 !! There were just auto rickshaws outside the station and we eventually negotiated a ride with one. The driver said he knew where the hotel was, but of course he didn't - so we spent 15 minutes roaming round Pushkar trying to find the hotel or someone we could wake up...

Pushkar...pilgrim town or the hippie dream?

...Ir al final de esta pagina para leer las experiencias en espaņol Fast Facts In Central Rajasthan Population = 15,000 The town clusters around Pushkar Lake with a maze of narrow-laned streets that spread out from there. It's a small and tourist-friendly town. Pushkar "passports" and Pushy Priests In Pushkar ghats (refers to a series of steps leading down to a body of water in many parts of South Asia), priests (some genuine and most of them NOT), offered to do puja (prayer) for me for which...

Pushkar

Our last hotel with the group was the best so far. This was for the simple reason that it had a swimming pool! Also we were given the choice between slightly cooler and plusher rooms in the main hotel or nice little pool-side 'cottages'. We opted for quick pool access. The air-con in our room was quite noisy and a bit too cold so we ended up turning it off anyway. The pool was only about ten metres long but boy was it refreshing in the heat! After a dip and lunch we had an orientation walk. I...

Pushkar

The narrow and winding streets of the holy town of Pushkar are filled to the rim with souvenir stores, clothing shops, beggar women and kids, and of course, "holy men", all competing for the tourist wallet. The stunning architecture all throughout the town still peak through the messy shop signs and cacophony of wires and cables. No meat, eggs, narcotics or public display of affection ("smooching" as the official sign calls it) are allowed here. Pilgrims come here to get a blessing from the...

... shop, cafe, restaurant, guest house or hotel is a temple. And every temple has a family living in it looking after it and collecting the donations. Most are new and some are really impressive, I have a theory that those religions who haven't managed to get a temple at the prime location on the shore of the lake, make up for it with size further inland.

So the bus drops us all off and now the mobbing starts again. Pushy Priests and Pujas in Pushkar

... bovines to our destination.

We are immediately accosted at the entrance by a smooth talking operator who delighted us with his cupla focal. He gave us a small newspaper package filled with flowers and lumps of sugar, leads us around (much to many Indian's amusement) and shows us how to make offerings. Then before you can say "bless me father for I have sinned, I have worshiped false Gods..." we are getting whisked from the temple down to the lakeside for a puja (prayer ...

Holy Brazilians!

... to get reeeallly cranky. I was hungry, thirsty and just wanted to go back to the hotel. I finally convinced everyone that I needed to get back and they finally (yet hesitantly) got up and started walking back into town. On the way we got invited by one of Mani's friends to go in for some chai and god knows what else. I gave a firm NO. Vanessa had also noticed my distress and backed me up on the 'need to get back now' mindset. Mani gave us a ride (so there were three of us) back ...

Valentine's Day in the Holy City

... Here you can also witness the sacred bathing rituals and be hounded by 'holy men' to be purified with a blessing and granted a 'holy passport', a quite ingenious creation of a ribbon, worn around the wrist, signifying you have been blessed, meaning the 'holy men' will actually leave you in peace as you visit the lake area. A subtle form of bribery/motivation?!?! We visited the lake, the ...

... us to go to. We eventually find what seems to be a collection of various temples at the bottom of the mountain populated by fornicating monkeys. A short climb reveals more, including a weird looking pink god atop a crocodile! We are about to leave when a priest materialises from nowhere motioning to us. My ******** alert meter goes off but I give him the benefit of the doubt. He turns out to be the priest of the Ganesh temple and invites ...

No Curry, No Hurry - Still In Pushkar

... We have a TV in our room on which we sometimes watch late night Bollywood shows or Indian Idol. There's a few little businesses set up along the streets leading to milkman and they all try to get your attention so you buy necessities from them. There's one guy who is like a laughing buddha, he sells supari (chewing betel nut candy) to Nadine then chuckles as he says "good tourist, good tourist" as we walk away. One guy calls out without fail every time we walk past. You ...
