There's nowhere to eat in Zomba

... Zomba hasn't really got much to say for itself really - and by 6pm everything is basically shut! We decided to get tea at a street stall, but the deep fried egg, meatless dry fish and cold chips weren't really everything we could have hoped for. We ended up back at the bar for more beers (it seemed to be the only one open).

The next morning we dined finely on wisely purchased baobab jam and peanut butter sandwiches and got ...

Fun adventures

... We bring the kids to town with us and to the supermarket. It's funny to see the local people's reactions to us. Most people stare and laugh, but other some up to us and ask if the kids are ours or where we have taken them from. They they tell us that we are doing a very good thing and they thank us over and over again for being there for the children. It's very sweet. We've also been taking the ...

Back to Nature

... it as our 5 year anniversary dinner which was coming up in a couple days. We walked the dirt path back home by the dying light of my headlamp. We were just hoping the battery didn't die during the 20 min walk. The next morning we decided to walk down the gradual road decent to town to save our knees some pain from the steep path. We had not one cent in cash after the dinner the night before but ...

The first row and Liwonde NP

... snare a space in the middle all to herself. Eventually we arrive at Mangochi to change vehicle. A dusty and barren town, it acts mainly as a hub for connecting buses into other parts of the country. If this town were a part of the body it would be an armpit. The bus touts where aggressive and almost physical. Walked 4km rountrip laden with bags to an ATM. A frosty silence between us began. Liwonde NP was still 80 miles or so South. Most African ...

Smelly express bus to Zomba

... speed of 10km even downhill, uphill it would have been quicker to walk. To our dismay the bus then stopped another hour in the next town Limbe and the already crowded bus was packed with as many passengers as they could squeeze in, at this point the smell of body odour (our's included) was very bad, so we renamed the bus the Smelly Express. When we finally left Limbe the bus crawled its way to Zomba, stopping at every village on ...

The Zomba Plateau

... MTC is 1 euro). Elke avond zitten de meeste Malawianen aan het bier. Vooral de leger figuren drinken veel in het weekend en kunnen daar slecht tegen (ook een algemeen probleem eigenlijk). We bezoeken DE PLACE TO BE IN ZOMBA -> THREE MILES. Moeha...komt neer op drinken, bier, poolen en film kijken. Met z'n drie-en besluiten we zomba plateau op te gaan en dit doen we via the ...

Merry Christmas

... interesting as had never dived in a lake before, went on a village walk to see how the locals lived, learnt how to play poker and won many hands and enjoyed the sun. Did a secret santa gift and of course Neill got an extra small pair of bright pink girls undies which he put on, rang around the camp site and down to the lake in. We have photo's so when we can will put them on the website. Went a bit crazy on the wood carvings ...

Tuesday, October 10 -- leaving Mangochi

... we enjoyed the children's choir so much earlier, I made a special request for them to sing again. They did. Then the church choir sang as well. It was beautiful. After the service was complete, Beverly addressed everyone about LifeNets and gave some important pointers about our programs Then the lunch. Today we invited everyone over to the Nkopola Lodge for a lunch. All 140 people came and enjoyed ...

Zomba Plateau's view forever

After arrival in Zomba we looked around for accomodation for a while (as per usual but how easy it is in a vehicle). We made the awesome discovery of granny Stevens (?) cottage. Situated right on the edge of the plateau this house had been left exactly as the old lady whose it was had left it when she died. Right down to the books, bone handled cutlery and servants too. We were truly spoilt by three bathrooms complete with baths ...
