... The museum was informative with a few interesting videos (only in Japanese) and stuffed specimens. Then we were able to see a number of live tokis in the cages. There were a few binoculars placed in the observation room, but they seemed useless. My mam didn't say anything about them, but maybe she couldn't see the birds very well...

After that, we didn't have any plan again, but Mt. Donden was close and looked nice. So we drove up to the mountain lodge Donden ...

... station in beautiful weather with sunshine and blue skies, of course forgetting our water bottle in the freezer at the hostel, so if you're there, please help yourself to the green bottle in the bottom of the freezer. There's also some bread in the FREE basket and multivitamin juice and milk in the fridge, so help yourself.

The train is fully booked, so we drag our suitcases to the queue for the non reserved car and wait in line with Australians, Germans, Spaniards, ...

I’d love to say it was all in the planning, but it was actually pure coincidence that we arrived in the west coast city of Niigata at the start of one of the largest festivals of the year - the Matsuri. ... bag was that much lighter with a lot of empty space for me to fill again.

Dinner was an assortment of pre-packaged buns and rolls with weird and wonderful flavours which some people may say isn't really dinner, well tough bikkies they tasted too good for me to care. We used the ancient computer in the lobby of the hotel to get in touch with the outside world again and to let our hosts on Sado island know what time we will be arriving the next day then headed off to bed.
