Ros has an auspicious left foot in Bikaner

Ros: We don't like the desert. It is hot, and dusty and very very boring. Our train from Jaisalmer to Bikaner took 7 hours through the desert. In this time I think we saw about two camels, a deer and a few very very small dusty desert villages, whose stations wouldn't even sell us some tea. Nor was there any tea available on the train. Or snacks. Or lunch. The train was boiling (no AC carriages), horribly dry and whenever we opened the window we were blasted with sand. We'd drink water and fe...

RATS! RATS! RATS!

I pretty much had one reason I wanted to travel to Binkaner; The Karni Mata Temple (or better know in the west as The Rat Temple). According to those who worship there, the temple is a sacred place, and certainly one of the strangest places I have ever been to.

The legend goes... In the early 15th century Karni Mata (claimed to be an incarnation of the goddess Durga) lived in the town of Deshnok, about 30 Km south of Binkaner. When one of her clansmen's sons died while drinking from w...

I mentioned earlier that in the desert the silence is deafening, well I mean that literally, I awoke during the night around 2 am to absolute silence, no crickets, no birds, no swirling of wind in my ears, nothing, in my half awake stupor I thought I'd gone deaf, it was that quiet.

I could write for hours about our desert experience the heat, the scenery and the people we met along the way. I could write about how camels chew the ...

... but was closed. there was another next door that was open tho - so we went with that. The next morning we could see our surroundings better, and they could be best described as post-apocalyptic - until I looked in the washroom, and decided the apocalypse was still in progress. I hate squat toilets! specailly this one. The reason for our trip to Bikaner tho, was the Karni Mata temple - famous for ...

... when a rat came over to see about Travis and ended up biting his toe. It was pretty funny. So we walked around and looked at the rats scurrying all over and tried to ignore the ones without eyes or patches of hair, because it's extremely rude to disrespect a rat. Finally we left the temple and climbed on a bus back to Bikaner. Some very nice old men gave Travis and me their seats because we were foreign and they were getting off at the next stop. And ...

Once again another fort to visit in this city, this one was called Junagarh. More of the same stuff, carvings in sandstone, lattice work, etc. Also went to Lalgarh Palace, which has now been turned into a hotel but still has a museum with loads of old photos of royalty. Rajasthan is known for its miniature ...
