Emergency Brakes and a Tiny Rental Car

So what do emergency brakes and a rental car have in common? It turns out you can't set the GPS on the rental car if the emergency brake isn't on. Try to figure out that one when all the instructions are in Japanese!! And then... try to find the emergency brake. When we first rented the little car we got the key turned... engine on.... controls figured out... and then ... whumph... you can't move when the brake is on so ...

Life is too short to spend it in cube land!

... us into it. Japan consumerism wasn't overwhelming either because it was all so new and different then what we had at home. Also, I have to admit, I am enjoying being a full blown consumer again. I'm tired of the same three shirts and two pants I've been wearing for 42 weeks. I'm happy to be listing to what I want on the computer while tying these thoughts down. However, I am freshly reminded of exactly how luck I am ...

Thats all folks!

... and got as south as the Cape Toi before having to turn around and head back up to Miyazaki. In Matt and Gretchen style, we got ourselves in over our heads on our way to Beppo which is along the east coast of Kyushu. The hills were bigger then we though and it was raining (which, aside from being a bit unpleasant, slows you down.) Just as we were finishing up our last break, hoping we could squeeze two hours of ...

The End is Koko!

... on any regular basis mind you. Late start after checking out a couple parks of ancient stone Buddhas, and then uphill on the Kunisake peninsula which has large temples, and larger hills all over the place. The rain started around 10:30, but for some reason, we were thinking it wasn't so far to Beppu, known far and wide for natural hot springs, so we put up with the rain knowing we'd be soaking in a hot tub before too long. The rain only occasionally let up to inhale ...

Unreal Part II

... were extremely proud to walk me around the factory. Several young Japanese girls were following us around the factory taking pictures and getting us tea and coffee. Needless to say, the male dominated society is different, but I`m enjoying myself! :) I`m exhausted and going out to dinner tonight which probably means more karaoke. Peace.

Craziness

... the highest suspension bridge in the world and taken a museum tour. All of this while defiling myself every night trying to keep up with the Japanese tradition of filling your beer, sochu or sake glass before you finish your last. UNREAL. Every bar has a karoke machine that is well used. Tonight, I will perfect the phrase, E Eh Kedo des, which means no-thank you. They don`t take no easily and usually I give in first. More Later.

Surprise at the Airport!

Ok! I made it to Japan, however at the airport I was quite surprised to see 20 rotarians with a HUGE banner welcoming us to Japan. I was not in any shape to meet anyone, but I didn't have a choice. We were quickly shuffled off to our Hotel where the local Rotarians had dinner waiting on us. We met our host families that we will stay with starting Monday Night. However, only a few people could speak English and my host could not. When Japanese people ...

Winding down...

... I got up early the next morning as I had a few hours to kill before my train to Beppu. Luckily it was a nice day, so I walked to the peaceful Miyazaki Jingu and had a stroll around Heiwadai-koen, home to a vast array of odd clay haniwa (tomb guardians) which had been excavated from somewhere or other. In keeping with the rest of my short stay in Miyazaki, it was a relaxing morning, with nothing to get the pulse racing, but enjoyable nonetheless...
