    It was time to head up towards the top western corner to Greece, to visit Corfu. Did you know that Corfu only joined Modern Greece in 1864? We didn’t! And it also turns out that Phil the Greek – or is that Sir Phil the Greek, was born in Corfu! And it was also the beloved holiday location of Empress Elisabeth (Sissi) of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. We visited both locations (Mon Repos & Archilleon) but weren’t very impressed ...

    ... the Ducal Palace (though why she needs alcohol when she is so high on art remains a mystery!) and then returned to the hotel to relax and freshen up before dinner.

    Tomorrow we move on to Parma (famous for its cheese) by way of a four hour taxi, bus and train trip. The actual travel time is much less than this, but of course you have to allow for connections etc. Meanwhile, enjoy the blog and the photos ...

    ... Vinci (not clear what if one is not fairly fluent in Italian). Well, Joy rounded the corner of the doorway and started reading the exhibition screens showing the English translation to the Italian notes, which were all about this painting which had been discovered and which was now attributed to Leonardo, how it was found and what all the story was, who the portrait was about etc ..... La bella principessa, a portrait of Bianca Sforza who died aged 14/15. ...

    ... a good menu of local dishes, and very reasonably priced: three courses, plus wine, dessert and coffee, came to 41.50, and could not have been faulted. We reckon on going back there tomorrow.

    Speaking of which, that will be our last chance to visit the town's National Gallery, which has been closed for the holiday so far. Hopefully it will be open tomorrow, as it has several paintings by Joys boyfriends and it is in the beautiful and historic Ducal ...

    The atmosphere was great...it was just like sitting down to eat at the family table, everyone dipping in and out of bowls of the same foods, all being served at the same time, and chatting and laughing. The staff had everything running like clockwork and were so friendly.
