'Chill Out' Margarita

... since there are very few signposts on the island and we don’t have a map! Their maid is resident here, hence the Spanish only conversations, which we are just about managing, but I think she has enjoyed our company!

In touring the island we have noticed that there are, not surprisingly, some significant differences between the main areas. Some parts are crowded, such as Porlamar that is the most built up area, in complete contrast to other ...

No hacer hablar a la guerra en Isla de Margarita

... but thanks to Andrea’s “cola” weaving skills and Armando buying our tickets for the bus we even managed to get some arepas to eat before we left. Once we arrived Tita took us to get some empanadas for breakfast, which were very tasty. Then onto her swimming pool for the perfect antidote to our tiring journey.

My time in Margarita is now drawing to a close, it has been a great place to relax before the hard work starts!

Robeeeeerrto!!!! Mais uma tequila!!!!!!!!

Islands in the stream.....

... have a wee bit of a weight problem. Food here can be very fatty, and lots of it is fried, so it`s easy to pile on the calories. A simple request for a sandwich is likely to produce something dripping in industrial quantities of mayonnaise and ketchup. Rio has the cult of the body beautiful, and people in the Andean nations eat quite healthily, so I haven`t seen much obesity for a few weeks. After the Andes, the size of some Venezuleans came as a ...

Cuba and Venezuela - old and new revolutions

... of the USA. Fidel's Cuba has largely withstood attempts by the US to crush the regime since its inception. In its early years, it created a 100% literate population. It provided health and education for those who had been excluded historically. However, circumstances change with time. The younger generations cannot identify with the pre-Revolution times...They have real desires, and real frustrations which they cannot express. Cuba is suffering many internal problems as ...

Dirty, Dirty Island but great hot dogs!

... cheapest. It's roughly 11p for a bottle and it's always served ice cold! So to sum it all up most of our time was spent standing on dirty street corners, sipping beer with the locals and eating hot dogs - winner! Anyway, I've just realised that practically all I've talked about is the food, but to be honest that's what our time in Isla Da Margarita was all about. We enjoyed ourselves but it was soon time to go further into Venezuela in search of better (and hopefully cleaner) places.....

The Islands of the Margaritas?

... sunbench and of course the same free alcoholic cocktails as I would at the hotel, just showing my keys.

So imagine this scenario: A 23 year old Icelandic girl, from a country where alcohol costs nearly as much as gold, goes to a hotel with unlimited free booze. How does that end?

Yes, you guessed right!

I decided to go cocktail testing. I had Cuba Libre, Mojitos, Piña Coladas,,, but what really got me off the ship of sane ...

... to push herself up she had to be helped up off her belly by two of the male dancers. She was holding her wrist and the two dancers escorted her into the lobby of the resort, I assume for some form of treatment. I don't believe the injury was that severe, perhaps just a scratched up arm and bruised pride, but I have never seen old people move that fast in my life! Her husband jumped up with his cane and hobbled over to her instantly. Then the remaining mass of retirees ...
