Davao, the window to Mindanao.

... and about 25 commercial resorts along the striking coastline. The beautiful and serene seashore is endowed with mangroves, swamps and coconut trees. This earthly paradise has been praised for its beauty like no other island in the region. It is blessed with many unspoiled natural attractions such as crystal waters, caves, magnificent rock formations and a well protected, flourishing fauna and flora. The endless waters surrounding Samal Island are ...

Leaving Davao City

... together on a row. We weren’t by the window so we could barely see. I saw some cabin crew sit on seats that looked like car seats for babies. One of the cabin crew had to sit facing the back of the plane so it felt like he was falling. It would have been scary for me. They gave out snacks and drinks. It took one and a half hours. I looked at comics on the newspaper ...

Samal Island's Pool in the Woods

... habal-habal and instruct the driver to take me to the resort. I know I'm near the place when I see that huge billboard on the left side of the road, welcoming me to the cascade.

To gain access, I usually pay a small token at the resort's gate, which the city government uses for the resort's upkeep. As I amble towards the falls, I always feel like being caught in a time warp, transported into some old growth rainforest as towering ...

Prisoners in Paradise

... It would be hard to beat Mulu Caves. I have to admit that the staff throughout the resort were very friendly and anxious to be of service, and it was a very enjoyable experience. In the evening we went to another P99 meal, which we didn't think was as good as our first one, though an American we met there said it was the best one around. He didn't seem to know the one we had been to though, as the two cockatoos in cages outside the door ...

Long, long bus ride

... there are no flights that connect the cities. So another epic bus journey it is. Originally the title of this blog was "surfing the wilds of Mindanao", and was meant to feature the 120 km coastline of Surigao del Sur. You can't always have what you want, and the best gateways into this region are the cities of Tandag or Mangagoy. The bus services from Davao get into these areas at a rather unfortunate time of 2 am. Not very ...

Conference in Davao City

... presentations to better equip the leaders and wives present for service in the Church, and I had also the opportunity to make a presentation. We enjoyed getting to know people who were new to us from different regions during lunch and dinner and in the fellowship time we had during breaks. Just before dinner we took some group photos in the beautiful gardens of the hotel. It was a pleasant and constructive day.

Humbled by Apo

... hot noodles, which I gobbled up inside my tent. Outside, the din reached fever pitch as my companions drank and raised the roof till midnight. But it hardly disturbed me. Still on cloud nine, I slept like a log atop the country's highest peak.

Good Friday. With my body still smarting from pain, I joined Odie and company as we explored the seven summits of Apo, searching for the perfect spot to get strong mobile phone signals. How I wanted to text ...

Around Davao

... terrible losses and the waste of it all. So many lives cut short before really even getting started in life. On one of the monuments are listed the names of some of the missing and dead. There was a Captain Meeker of the Air Force listed as missing in action. I wondered if he were a distant relative. After a brief visit to the Evascos home, we enjoyed a nice meal with Rey and Cynthia Evasco and Eriz and Teresa Dizon.
