It's really laid back mon!

Another overcast morning, with menacing clouds over the hills all round. I think we'll get wet which ever way we go.
We head out of San Jose on the 32 climbing steadily and it starts to rain more persistantly so we stop for waterproofs. As we climb higher we get into te clouds again and visibility reduces drastically. It's a single carriageway road with an extra lane for uphill and the road is ...

Puerto Viejo, Costa Rica ... Day 3

... into the late afternoon. Upon returning from our "hike" we tried to figure our what we wanted to eat. We drove into town and ended up a a nice open air (all are) restaurant. We sat on the 2nd floor, overlooking the busy street in Puerto Viejo. I had a chicken dish, Ed had Red Snapper, both were prepared fresh and were very good. We shared a shrimp appetizer, it was so delicious, I could have eaten another plate or two. I took photos ...

Ocean swapping

... on the verandah with a nice sea breeze coming in. Very lovely. On Sunday I was innocently wandering around town when I was accosted by these Americans, part of the "lifers" of Montezuma. It's a really hippy town where people end up staying for months and living on $2 a day by sleeping on the beach and making jewellery. It's a strange place. Anyway, I had inadvertently stumbled across "Margherita Sunday!" and was quickly indoctrinated. One of these lifers, nicknamed "El Pirate ...

Long and Crazy Trip

... and as we were up in the hills outside of Alajuela, you could see the lights of the town. I was dead on my feet, so I did little more than shower and go to bed. The next morning I was up at 5:30 as I had to be on the bus to Cahuita at 7:20. I had a rude awakening when I went downstairs: they told me there had been landslides due to all the rain and the road to Cahuita was closed. I grabbed some toast and tea and waited for my car ...

S-W-E-E-T Cahuita!

... more stop in Costa Rica before slipping into Panama on Saturday. This has been a long time coming and I look forward to it tremendously. I had been feeling a little beat up of late and was wondering if I needed a break from the third world. No. What I needed was the beach. A real beach. I have been inland for 4 months. I am like NEW MONEY now that I have gotten back to a good shoreline. I don't plan on settling for anything less than this anytime soon. S-WEET CAHUITA thanks for saving me.

Have another piece of chocolate cake...

... for too long, albeit in a absurdly cheap backpackers place. By absurdly cheap I mean it cost me £2.50 for the night. Rocking J´s has got a reasonably cool vibe going on, but to me it seems to be trying too hard to cling on the free-loving, hippy style of yesteryear. 2nd night I booked in to somewhere called Exotica, with double bed, hot shower, cable tv, fridge and fan and all for just £12.50. And no, I have no idea why it ...

Steffi arrives - Happy 40th Birthday!

... Caribbean coast and specifically to the Cahuita National Park. It only takes about 4 hours, even though it is just 195 kms, but the roads and traffic are not adequate for any type of speeding (80kms per hour is the limit in most roads). Being low season we could decide on many of the different hotels and cabins along the Cahuita coast, and we end up in the Jaguar, especially because of the good price ($45 for a large triple) and ...

Cahuita

... to Cahuita it was starting to get dark, so we walked into the village to find a place to stay. We found a place for $20 a night, with private bathroom and hot water. It is clean and the people are really friendly. We both loved Cahuita straight away. It is a tiny place with the beaches on your door step and reggae music blasting out from all directions! We had a great meal and a few beers for about $8 US each, so it was ...

TRIED TO GO SNORKELLING BUT THE TIDES HAD THE WATER TOO MURKED UP. TODAY I WENT TO CAHUITA NATIONAL PARK. I THINK THERE WAS A MONKEY IN EVERY TREE. NEVER SEEN SO MANY. HAD ...
