      ... past the Grand Canal, all the Gondola operators in their blue & white striped outfits. It's a big commercial business now, and so damned expensive. €80 for 40 minutes PER PERSON!!!! Yup, no kids discount in Venice. €320 for a 40 minute gondola ride - what we saw and discovered today on foot was unbeatable.       ... guide was the lovely Branka. Our first stop was Ston - a tiny village on the coast. Croatia is surrounded by towering limestone mountains (same as Montenegro and Amalfi), which once again makes it difficult to grow anything.
