... and I wanted to have a look. I bought some honey in a traditional Bulgarian pottery jar, and Rosemary bought three little jars of honey as a gift for her mother. And then it was finally back to the hotel. I sat out on my balcony in the sun to read for a while. I got more reading done in 30 minutes than I have over the entire trip!

... the few towns we visited and stayed in, concrete abounds and most of the concrete is old, mouldy, grey and worn; and this was in the new housing developments. We tried to avert our eye from the older sections of town.

With that said (and out of our systems) some towns, like Shumen, had some fine pre-Communist era buildings to view, if you looked really hard.

The border was 10 km ahead and there our rate of progress changed. The first 2 checks were relatively 'routine’ and then we came into a huge parking area technically in ‘no man’s land’ as there was a duty free shop. The vehicles were queued in 10 lanes and there was minimal movement.
