Bellagio- Not the casino but the real thing

After my second workaway I decided to head up to Lago di Como (Lake Como) on Miriam's recommendation for a couple of days before my friend Christine came over from London and we met in Milan for a long weekend. It was a bit of a journey to Bellagio, the village I was staying in (bus+train+train+ferry=8hrs), but it was totally worth it. Surrounded by mountains and alps, it reminds me of ...

... frigid lake for my daily ceremonial swim. Finally, a bit further, the gorge opens up a bit, and there are big patches of grass interrupting the endless forest. It's quite refreshing to see... it seems like it's been forever since I last saw open space. On this side, again, abandoned stone houses, but on the other side of the river there's a villages that's still inhabited. This is really starting to feel like the Alps that I read about in ...

Day 274 6 hrs, 13 kms According to Google Maps, it's not possible to create a walking map up across Splugenpass. I'm hoping that that's only because when Google Maps comes across a tunnel, they automatically assume that pedestrians aren't allowed through it. Hoping... But doing a little research I found that there's supposed to be a hiking trail up towards the pass. That would be perfect... if I can find it! I follow a rather pedestrian ...

... winding pedestrian streets full of people, pausing to treat myself to a delicious pastry. It feels like I've reached the final frontier trading post before launching out into the wild. My favorite spot is the rushing river cutting right through the middle of town, with houses perched atop the giant boulders along its banks, with a statue of a saint giving his blessing to those who pass. I try to figure out the best way to take my video clip ...

Day 274 1 hr, 1 km With the steep, wooded mountainside to my left and a valley that is quickly narrowing to my right it's only a few hundred meters and I'm in the next town, Messe. I know that the uphill climb is getting close, including my big goal: to cross the Splugenpass from Italy to Switzerland on foot. I know it was just planted here for the warm months, but seeing a banana tree in someone's yard just feels really unappropriate. C'mon folks, this is the ...
