We drove on for 15 minutes to a place called Raiano where we had a fabulous picnic lunch next to an old hermitage built over a stream in a picturesque gorge. The food was really tasty and very Italian. Carol had a swim in the chilly stream then we moved on to the Abbey of the Holy Spirit about 15 minutes out of Suloma and on the site of where Pope Celestine V founded ...

Woken at 7am by the church bells right outside our window. I was a bit worried when I saw them yesterday but I was assured that they ring for the last time at 10pm and for the first time at 7am. That was true, thank heavens. Breakfast was good then on the road by 9.15. We travelled to a quite large hilltop town called Scanno through some most beautiful scenery of scattered hilltop villages, rocky outcrops and tall mountains and ...

... some stage, a cloth falls away releasing doves and the men then run back to the original church with the Madonna. It is attended by 30 to 40 000 people. (The family of singer Madonna came from a small hilltop village near here.) Derek and I bought some traditional cakes and while the others drank wine etc, we had tea and coffee and cake. ... down in a square in Milan.
It was wild rocky country and is ski fields in winter. It was cold up there with chilly wind.
We took about an hour and a half to return through villages, wild landscape and fields. It is a very picturesque part of Italy. A varied and very enjoyable day....again.
Dinner was at the monastery and was four courses. The prosciutto has been varied and very good. Dinner was very tasty but too much food. Bed at 11pm.

... while Derek, Gerry and Neil walked up to an old castle above the monastery. Our room is basic But comfortable with a mezzanine floor where we sleep.Derek dropped the soap in the shower and had to open the door and get out to retrieve it.
We met at 7pm for drinks and a four course dinner was served at 8pm. Beautiful antipasto of local product, pasta, pork with potato and a cake slice. All very good fun as usual.
    Bed by 10.30.
