It was raining today and really cold so we took in the local museum full of Roman antiquities found in recent local excavations, it was small but still astounding that it was over 2000 years ago and they were so civilised. We had a turn up and down the Corso and then went for lunch at the highly anticipated Da Gino, it is only open for lunch and didn't disappoint. We took a little more care than yesterday ...

... local black truffles, oil and parmesan and then pappardelle with fresh ricotta, ham and pecorino, for dessert we had semi freddo and apple cake, we were offered a meat course but declined! Armed with maps and directions we walked around the 13th C town with narrow streets and charmingly old views all around. Snowmelt was dripping ...

The Morronese Abbey and Monastery of St Onofrio

... shocking earthquake in 2009 - over 300 people were killed, and thousands were left homeless. Rebuilding is still going on. In terms of the Abbey, it housed the Celestine order of monks from the 1200s through to 1806 when Napolean closed down the order. Celestine is a saint who was elected Pope completely unexpectedly (not bad for someone who spent almost his entire life sitting in a cave as a hermit), and for his (apparently) complete incompetence in ...
