Zoutwinning is belangrijk in deze omgeving. Het is ook niet voor niets dat de naam Salzburg daar uit afstamt. De oorspronkelijk mijnen liggen op het grondgebied Hallein beter op de berg Bad Dürrnberg.

... there....the top lookout landing had spray from the crisp clear mountain water settling on the rails and turning to ice....it was a welcome drink, after the long climb...as the ice melted in our mouths.....we caught a late bus back to Zell Am See...our friends took us to a restaurant which serves halal food and the whole dining area is decorated with Arabic Hashish pipes. Later, as we were driving back into Germany, we got pulled over by the federal German Polizai. Worried that we had broken a law, missed a signal or speeding, we pulled over quickly. Turns out they just wanted to check our papers on the car. That was interesting... I made for a good story, but my stomach sure sank!
