    A walk too far

... I did the hardest bit. Very windy though and sleeping out was not that pleasant.

Finally it was a walk east around the coast to Elafonisi. It was meant to take 5-6 hours. Well 9 hours later, with a very swollen and sore ankle, I made it. The track wasn’t particularly well defined and certainly in most parts couldn’t really be called a track. Lots of rock hopping trying to follow some marks and marker posts. Very ...

... goats, and sheep. As soon as Elofonisi came into view, we knew that the drive had been worth it. The beach has several inlets of turquoise water, set off by the white and pink sand. This part of the island can have very strong winds, so we headed to the more protected side of the beach and found ourselves some 3.5 euro lounge chairs under tiki style umbrellas. From there on, the day slipped lazily by as we alternated people watching, gazing out at e ...

... fantastic seafood. At the end of the meal we were given free desserts and shots of vodka, an interesting way to end lunch! Kyle and I wandered the alleys a bit more before joining Ally and Blair back at e hotel for a rest. Tonight we plan on watching the sunset from the rooftop hot tub before heading to a restaurant in the city's old Turkish bath. We are already regretting only giving ourselves 3 days on this incredible ...

Moved a little further west – 60km- to Chania. Yet another Venetian port and another "old town". Once again a pretty old town with lots of narrow alleyways, cafes and tourist shops. But nice.

Went to visit the war museum one day but closed due to renovations. Then out to Souda Bay to have a look at the bay that General Freyberg thought he had to defend rather than the airport at Malame. And ...

    Samaria Gorge - Kramer Style

... before getting to the final section of the gorge. The last 5km wove back and forth across the mostly dry river bed as the gorge narrowed. The steep walls were amazing and we could see why most of the injuries on the trail comes from people not watching where they were walking and tripping along the way. Except for 2-3km the trail was well worn rocks that were eagerly hoping to twist an ankle or a knee. At 4:45 we arrived at the end of the hike that was officially in ...
