    ... an excited welcome. Hugs, friendly exchanges of surprise as to how much younger we all are we sat down to “Spargel Suppe” the world renowned vegetable that Braunschweig exports to the rest of the world – white asparagus.

    ... course Arnold's wife Irene had prepared the obligatory coffee and kuchen which was delicious :) Arnold, who is now 78 years of age, had always been like an older brother to me.

    After almost missing my train from Herzogenrath to Gladbeck, I was relieved to experience a Regional train which is generally far more crowded with local commuters. It was a joy to be reunited with my cousin Brunhild (from my Mother's side) in the nigh darkness.

    ... with the last kick of the game. Celebrations went on at the Veltins Arena and on the journey back into town (just as well since it took nearly an hour thanks to tram problems). Strangely enough, the atmosphere in Gelsenkirchen was now much livelier. A few bars stayed open to accommodate our merriment and we made full use of them to celebrate, inflated prices be damned.
