... talk to people when I'm in a Dutch train, yet even with my limited comprehension of the Japanese language it seems completely natural to do it here.

I stayed in a lovely authentic ryokan (first time!) in Ito. This village at the sea, about 120km south of Tokyo, is very lively in summer, yet not very interesting in early spring. I walked a bit around town, grabbed a bite and quickly returned to the ryokan. It has it's ...

... for customers to sample. Gabe enjoyed a now infamous fifa session.
Having cut short on the fifa, we retreated for an early night before our early wake-up to go diving a few hours south west of Tokyo, on the Izu peninsula. I think at that point we had already entered paradise, but then a band started playing live music from a stage out on the river and it just got better from there.

We spent the afternoon enjoying fresh fresh sashimi bowls topped with who knows what kind of fish including some minuscule ...

... a concert on the river in Ito that evening and we decided to have a look as it was close to the hotel and we wanted to go out for dinner anyway. It turned out to be a performance by a local Taiko band. Hearing the smaller and larger drums being played together, accompanied by a flute was really great. And the whole thing taking place on the river made it magical. After a while it started to get pretty cold on the river so we went into ...
