... very luxurious room and then went for a walk, in which I was very quickly impressed with the sights along the way.

The town is sweet and small, therefore I reached the center very quickly, making it easy for me to get a sense of direction, find maps and stuff like that. I really only spent a little while, poking around, looking in shops and the like, then I got hungry and stopped in a small shop for a sandwich before taking a nice relaxing bath and hanging out in my hotel.

... a while and after lunch we went on a cruise on the Daugava River. Not the most exciting cruise as there was no commentary but we did see a few things that we probably wouldn't have otherwise, including the unusual tripod television tower on an island in the river.

Checked into the hostel and whilst the room is OK we don't have private bathroom although it is right next door (which may be a noise issue).

... who march in that "Soviet" way that seems, to me, so scary. I am still intimidated by hearing the spoken language because it, too, sounds threatening to my ear. Even a trio of teenage girls speaking Latvian as they pass gives me the shivers. We Americans have successfully stereotyped Russians as evil. And, because everyone here sounds Russian to my ear, I am swept up in anxiety. That makes no sense whatsoever because these folks are more anti-Russian than I will ever be. ...
