Amnesia and birds galore!

... Lima, that I was getting private transportation and not was going with Cruz del Sur for that part of the journey. When I reached Hotel El Mirador, I was pleasantly surprised to see that two Danish couples had checked in earlier the same afternoon, and I was kind of looking forward to meeting them. However, even though I did spend some time hanging around on the terrace and went to the restaurant for dinner, I never got even the faintest glimpse of them. What a shame – at ...

Pinguino & the Poor Man´s Galapagos

... beavered fervently in tiny kitchens chopping onions and spinning frying plans like circus performers. Local painters and workmen sat around to squeeze limes over their Cerviche and exchange stories, while others sank rum and cokes and Pisco Sours.

I was dripping drool on the scorching pavement by the time I eventually settled for a mixed seafood with rice, and washed it down with fat bottle of ice cold Pilsen beer for a measly 5 soles (just over a pound). Pisco Soured

We headed north on a sweaty beaten up old coach with the windows wound down to mix the smell of mouldy feet with the warm breeze that blew in through the windows. Corn fields and grapevines flew past in dusty blurs as the ladies who sell their weird snacks wandered up and down the aisle selling corn and fried animal crackers to all that were hungry or bored. Children cried intermittently and lovers exchanged sweaty kisses like high school children ...

Paracas and the Ballestas Islands

About an hours drive from Ica, we head to the coastal town of Paracas. From the time we entered the town we had a guy literally latch on to the car and ran while we drove to the port (he held on for about 3-4 minutes still running and then harrassed us for another half an hour). He was trying to sell us his boat tour and after a bit of shopping around we went with his company. It was great, we got to see sea lions, dolpins, penguins, local boobie birds, pelicans etc.

We ...

Addictive volunteer work in an earthquake zone

... and without too much hassle found a place to stay for the night before heading to work the next day. The next morning started with a rather scary intro to living in an earthquake zone... Around 10am we were having a lie in in the hostel when we heard this rumble outside like a massive truck driving past, but then it just got louder and louder and suddenly the walls shook violently, the lights flicked on and off and everything was moving!!
