Monday 5th Jan - we chose to have a day trip to this delightful little town in northen Italy hoping to find some snow to play in, and it was only about 2 hours by train. Aosta is a bilingual town in the Alps close to the entrance of the Mont Blanc tunnel, the major transport link of Italy to northern Europe. It has many very old roman ruins, but we didn't see any of the town! While researching the internet (what would we do without it) I discovered a cable ...

... before and usually there were metres of snow. While world cup ski events were being cancelled all around us, we tried to make the best of it by realizing that at least we were in the mountains, which were truly awe-inspiring. And then it happened... our Chirstmas miracle. It snowed and snowed and snowed. It ...

... t know how, we talked our way in to joining this party and squeezed ourselves into their cars. They drove us to the club. The club was a bowling alley. With a bucking bronco. And a pool table. It was incredible!!! But no one was dancing and no one danced with me. ... was good, but odd: a great thick vegatable soup followed by meatballs on cabbage, instead of pasta (hey, we're in Italy - what's going on?!). Interesting company at dinner - a British guy and his Dutch wife, an Israeli guy travelling alone, and an American couple from Pennsylvania.

I think I kept the whole dorm room up with my snoring that night (or so Barbara tells me).

... out some clothes and hung them out on a clothesline in a super windy spot overlooking a glacier.

Dinner was a terrific risotto dish and pork in a cream sauce. Finally no cheese (were not in France anymore!). We sat across from an older British woman who was walking the whole hike by herself!

We had private room for oursleves which was a treat and we slept like the dead.
