    ... These are generously funded by the local commune and are very well attended. Last night there was a small group singing in those lovely old French songs that tell a story, with a very repetitive melody....but most of the crowd seemed to know all the words off by heart, and tapped along with big smiles on their faces. We mused that this is a particularly French phenomenon.

    Empuries was the furthest outpost of the Greek Empire and although it is not thought Hannnibal ever visited, legions of Romans used this spot as a disembarkation point for invasion. Greek and Roman ruins are evident. Whilst we were visiting, the exhibition in the local museum focussed on the sex lives of the Romans. Those racy Romans!

    ... it had seeped away and the path to the beach was mostly dry. We visited Sigean, Leucate, Port Leucate and Le Barcares. It's mostly a holiday area with many holiday villages of apartments and chalets. This is a very windy part of the coast, so it's fine for windsurfing, sand yachting, kite surfing and any form of wind blown sport on sea or land.
