... wonderful villages up near the top that mainly service the ski traffic in winter and summer hikers. Two km from the summit of Col du Mollard is one such village, Albiez-Montrond. It can been seen in the pic from the summit view and where I filled my bidons.

... was still cold and the cloud was very low. I was itching for a ride so decided to tackle some local Cols near us.

They were some great climbs, Villerzembrun climb with its hairpins and early steep ramps out of St Michel and Col de Beau Plan with forest mist through the clouds on quiet roads and only a fool like me out riding them. ... between my legs I returned to Annecy to pack up and make our way to the Maurienne Valley and the heart of the big Alps climbs.

To rub salt into my wounded ego the SD card in the camera played up so I lost all my pics of the short 50km ride today. Oh well re-format and away we go again.

We visited Albertville, sight of the 1992 winter Olympics and St Jean de Maurienne on our way to St Michel de Maurienne where we will base ourselves for the next week.

... 6.9% and a height gain of 1245 m and is the ninth highest paved road in the Alps and the sixth highest mountain pass. The maximum gradient is 10.1% at the summit. Including the Col du Telegraphe, the whole climb is 34.8 km long, gaining 2120 m. in height with an average of 6.1%. Piece of cake.

I was feeling pretty good after a day of rest and was actually finding the Telegraphe a nice ride, but not long into my climb the weather started to turn. ...

... went to the delicatessen across the road where we got some fabulous goose liver pate, then headed back to the patio behind the hotel to eat. Connie made do with a coffee out of the vending machine. I should mention that this hotel is a gem. Great layout with the parking and cycle storage, but beyond that the rooms were nice and the whole hotel had this thousand year old feel to it but still was quite modern and very well kept.
