... too far to cover in a single day on a touring bike carrying all that weight ... the bags, not me!

So I have a dilemma, which I need to resolve by the morning as my hotels are booked and paid for the remainder of the trip. To help me think it through I shall now find a restaurant and then sleep on the problem.

Distance so far: 1010 km (averaging 126 km per day of cycling - that's 30 km a day more than I averaged on my trip to Portugal in 2009 ... ...

... Then I see mountains on the horizon ... eek! But any concerns I had dissolved as the route continued to undulate with not a scary climb in sight. I stopped briefly in Riom for a snack and another two litres of water before pushing on to the finish.

As I arrived on the outskirts of Clermont-F I could clearly see the towering cathedral of local black stone with its twin spires marking the heart of the city, but my Garmin insisted on ...

... Clermont-Ferrand, and only came off it to go through Millau (we'd "done" the viaduct on a previous trip, now wanted to see the town). Arrived at Camping Municipal at Ceyrat, at 18.30 - had to phone for entry as the office shut at 6! 2396 miles, so 209 ...

... is another gem, with spacious pitches and the best sanitary facilities I have ever seen. Pretty murals on the wall and healthy pot plants add ambiance to the immaculately clean, HEATED facilities!

The hilltop village of Orcet is a pleasant walk from the campsite, affording wonderful views over the valley and the outskirts of Clermont-Ferrand.

And a real bonus is the weather, with beautiful sunshine and 21 degrees!
