We climb 1900 metres up and 700 back in one day!

We're now heading to Grande Comore, the largest (60kms by 20 kms, with a population of 363,000) of the independent Comoros Islands. The only time most people have heard of it was when in November 1996 an Ethiopian Airlines flight was highjacked, ran out of fuel, and tried to land here, but ditched in the sea, right near the beach. The main thing we know is that since independence in 1975 they have had more than 20 coups d'etat, so we're a bit wary about coming here, so are only staying two ni...

A trip to the wonders of nature

My trip to Comoros Islands was more of an adventure than a visit. As soon I arrived there the amazing nature intrigued me into discovering the wildlife of the islands. The nature was richer that what i had expected with all the endangered species of birds and turtles, and some kinds of fish that you can only find in the Comoros ...

More reasons why I need a rich husband...

... where in the middle of their presidential elections. The three islands all elect presidents and then one overseeing president is elected (about as efficient as it sounds). There were 18 candidates for this tiny country and political spirits were running high: most obviously seen in the trucks and vans spilling over with people shouting for one candidate or another while careening down the horrible roads. The election was held Sunday forcing Rose and I to ...

Boating misery

... 2am I woke up for the 6th time that night laying on my thermarest trying not to touch anything and I felt like somebody was stepping on my bladder!! What the?? Actually nothing so dramatic, i just needed to pee. But really really badly. I had been trying to ignore the feeling for about four hours since I didn't want to face going to the bathroom especially since I didnt even know where it was. Well it was time to face the inevitable... So I ...

Time to leave the Comoros Islands

... only to be awoken by our hungry creature. This time, it was bold enough to try to eat Marta's hair while she slept. What an audacious critter! We were thouroughly disgusted and annoyed and kept up all the rest of the night as it scurried loudly about our room. And that was the seagull moment. Two things I love about this place: 1. You can buy a wheelbarrow full of womens underwear. 2. French rap. Ridiculous.

MISERY CRUISE 2007

... his English isn't much better. Maybe it could work. - The guy who smelled horrible and also happened to be positioned right next to our heads. - The guy who thinks it's a good idea to catch a seagull and show it off in our communal living space. As if it wasn't dirty enough already. - Random mystery bits falling on our faces. We were on the sea - it couldn't have been dirt or dust, so what was the film of junk on my face when I awoke from my ...

A la recherche des cocos fesses

Il semble que le mauvais temps nous suive. Pas grand chose à voir. Les Comores ressemblent beaucoup aux Seychelles. L'île semble très pauvre. Les gens sont gentils, mais quelque chose manque. It looks like the bad weather follows us. Not much to see. The Comores look a lot like the Seychelles. The island seems very poor. The peoples are nice but something is missing.
