Our first day in Athens was busy, but amazing. We started
the day with a walking tour of the archaeological dig site at the Ancient Agora
of Athens. Just seeing this site as a normal tourist would have been great, but
being a Randolph-Macon student seems to have some really nice perks! Dr. John
Camp is not only a Randolph-Macon professor, but the director of the
excavations at the Agora in Athens. He usually teaches at R-MC during the fall
... it was in the Monastiraki neighborhood. Must be popular with the travel guides. Certainly the staff spoke excellent English and have been very helpful. The taxi driver however dropped me at the wrong hotel and overcharged me by 10 euro.

... see you later every time he left the room - even just to have a shower! Tuesday To be honest I was buzzing most of the day. I was just so excited and had so many highlights. It was a little bit of disbelief mixed with joy. We were up at 7 (5am to our bodies) but it began wonderfully - with fresh fruit, fresh Greek yoghurt and Greek honey. It was like the hostel read my mind. We set off for the acropolis! It was really great to have Zara with me as she studied Classics ...
... Luckily for us a very popular taverna was located right next door to our apartment. There we ate traditional Greek food for dinner including a delicious melt off the bone pork leg that we demolished. As an "appetiser" we were given free shots of ouzo and at the end of our meal we were given Greek yoghurt with sweet raisins! Ouzo is an anise flavoured, strong local alcohol. Too strong for the girls I think.

... on the ship, I flagged down a security agent from the ship to help us board. Part of the boarding process before the cruise starts is you are photographed. That photo is linked to every swipe of your ship ID card to confirm you are the person who can use that card. You are checked in and out of the ship at each port with a swipe of that card.
