... climbed to Trou de la Mouche (via Combe du Grand Cret) - 2467m above sea level. It was stunning! Absolutely spectacular! We hiked back to the van, this is without a doubt the best parking view we have yet!!! We treated ourselves to some local French cheese today, so cut that up with some baguette, got a cold beer and admired the vista. This is the good ...

... the side of the mountain as well as some cows wearing their own KOM jerseys.

After the rest it was time for an 8 mile decent back to the town of St Jean de Maurienne. This was a very technical decent with very twisty roads and times of uneven pavement. The pros often go 50-60 MPH down these descents. They are crazy!

When we reached the town it was time to go back up the mountain to our viewing area. We had about an eight-mile climb left. The support vans were ...

    ... getting tiring.

Today's ride was relatively short at around 38 miles with 4,064 vertical feet of climbing. We had a nice steady warm-up to begin the day. We had a group of about 12 riders and we pace-lined through flat roads for about 7-8 miles. After the warm up we began our first hill climb. Today’s climbs were relatively tame compared to the Galibier monster. Most of the climbs were about 3-5 miles long. The roads were surrounded by larger trees, which gave us a ...

    ... new “flat”
since we had been climbing so much, 3% seemed like a piece of cake. At the top
of the Aravia we had an amazing view of Mount Blanc, which is the highest
mountain in the Alps topping out at 15,771 feet. Our ride leader said it was
rare to see the peak as it is usually covered in mountains.

From here we did a super long decent back into the valley.
At the bottom we took a vote, continue as planned and climb another ...

    ... persistence and survival.

Ultimately I made it, absolutely shagged, but I was still standing unlike a stack of others who were on the roadside collapsed.

I met up with Chris at the finish, he didn;'t make the time cut on Glandon and was ferried back to the finish by bus....not happy.

So that's the Etape for another year....not so sure about doing this again. This experience was enough.
