You Say Goodbye and I Say Hello

... penpal project, working around teaching in Surgeres. Lydia is so good that way, she said I can drop into class anytime to do that with the kids. And I know she really doesn’t mind at all.

My First week in Surgeres went quite well. It will be a bit different working in this school than the others. Most teachers will have me take half the class, which is normal for Courcon as well, but I will take them for the whole hour instead of 25-30 ...

      The History of Rope...and Rochefort

This building, called la Corderie Royale, is where all of the ropes were made for different boats and ships, like Hermione. It is 374 meters long and the longest building in Europe. They had to make ropes close to 200 meters long and this explains the length of the Corderie Royale, because of the way the ropes were traditionally made in the past. ... it will be in August, then back to France.

The cool thing is, one of my wonderful colleagues’ (Lydia)
husband has been a carpenter rebuilding Hermione. How cool is that to be a part
of this history? Lydia, her husband Ambroise and their family will be flying to
Halifax where Ambroise will be part of the team sailing her back to France in
August….of course Lydia and their son will be flying back to France. How ...

      Feeling Blessed

... It was really funny to see their fluffy bodies and their little skinny legs running as fast as they could towards us.

For lunch we had the famous foie gras (goose, or duck liver). I say famous because the week before and after Christmas all I heard from the students was "What? You haven’t had foie gras?" or “You don’t eat foie gras for Christmas?” So now, I can proudly say that I have eaten it and I like it quite a bit actually. It comes in ...

      Saintes

And so the weekend travelling has begun. Even if it was a nice little short day trip to Saintes. Saintes is about a half hour train ride South East from Rochefort, it is also found along the Charente….the river that Rochefort is on. BUT, in Saintes, the water is a nice bluey green colour, rather than the muddy brown colour we have in Rochefort. If it wasn't such a gloomy, misty day it would have been much ...
