    Pen-pals and long overdue visits

A travel blog entry by missmm_2206 on May 31, 2015

    SUNDAY 31 MAY, 2015

Up at 6.30am and ready for another day. This time driving into Germany - towards Aachen - to visit Helen's pen-pal Karin. Helen and Karin were both studying in high school when, as 15 year olds, they were matched in a pen-pal writing program, Helen to learn German, Karin to learn English. They have kept in contact for all these years, with letters, phone calls and more recently, emails. They have met in person once, 33 years ago, which ...

At last we got the chance to spend more than a couple of days in Maastricht! My cousin Annelies and her husband Jules live there and it's a wonderful city full of history and culture. We really enjoyed the hospitality of our hosts and Jen and Matt were able to visit for my birthday. Sharan and Peter Burrow were only an hour away in Brussels so we got to spend a weekend with them as well as cousins Kees and Ans who live in the rural town of Berlicum and Sanne and Dan in Zierikzee ...

... at the same time. This is something that is just not possible to do anywhere in New Zealand. The kids thought this was pretty special. After a picnic lunch we got back into the car and headed back to Wim and Ria's in Rucphen ending our wee jaunt around Europe. We are now into our last week in Holland. The time has gone ...

Cruise Day 10: Andernach to Cologne

We arrived in Andernach early this morning. We did not have any time to explore here. We went in a coach for 2 hours to Maastricht, one of the oldest cities in the Netherlands, some opted for the Casemates tour, a network of underground tunnels, we just opted for the walking tour around the town. Before we got into the town, the coach made a detour so we could see Andre Rieu's home, even stopping so we could get out & take a photo. The weather was pretty mild about 14C, but ...
