Het is zover samen met Elma de laatste dag samen naar Couvin gefietst. Daar werden we opgehaald door mijn lieve tante. Lekker drie nachtjes daar in noord Frankrijk gebleven. The following day like all honest land-lubbers we decide that we are happiest in a car rather than a canoe so we go out for the day to Reims (Gallic nasally pronounced 'Rance’). The cathedral is impressive and has a series of church windows by Marc Chagall who lived in Reims. It is also situated within the Champagne region so we splash out on a bottle for a later date.

Scourmont Monastery

Another brown sign gamble. Abbaye de Scourmont, just outside Forges near Chimay in Belgium. A working monastery. Looked pretty good from the outside. Inside the main entrance there was a well tended grass and tree area that we crossed over to the church. The monks were identifiable by their robes, white long smock with a full length black tabard belted around the waist.

Gesterkt door wat koffie en witte broodjes – en zo waar ook een spontaan aangeboden pannekoek – gaan we verder zuidwaarts. Het gaat best vlot, ik merk dat ik wat conditie opdoe gedurende de tocht.
Onderweg komen we langs de abdij van Orval. De zon schijnt. We fietsen dwars door Montmédy, met de karakteristieke citadel op de heuvel. We knallen door, het is een fietsvakantie. We komen door Louppy, een dorp van niks met een imposant kasteel uit de 17e eeuw. ...

... nous avons eu les Moules et les frites, chez Bouboule et avons pu offrir un verre aux gens qui nous avaient aidé à décoller de Namur le matin-même - ils étaient aussi chez Bouboule. D'autres nous ont raconté plus tard combien eux-mêmes avaient eu du mal à décoller après nous avoir si bien aidés... C'était vraiment très difficile.
