      This morning we slept in as long as we could in order to be ready for a 9:45 departure from the hotel. It was a cool morning, Marjolaine needed a sweater and I almost did as we ate our breakfast on the tiny pool terrace.

      ... a flat red lava gravel plain whose colours were surreal. It was a
      short walk to the old crater rim where you could look out over the lava plain
      to the cone of the current active volcano which is Piton De Fournaise. It was a
      5 hour walk up to the edge of the current crater so we decided just to walk to
      the edge of the drop down to the old crater. What an amazing unique experience!

      ... this cauldron and up the other side then 5km further came to the third cauldron on which the current cone is on in the centre of. This volcano is not explosive and when it erupts it does not explode or throw up clouds of rock. Lava just comes to the surface and flows away. An eruption in 2007 flowed down the southern face to the sea and destroyed some homes and added 400 acres to the island but no one was injured.
