Day 40: Staying in KK for one night

Before we fly to Oz... first cancelled flight from Tawau to Kota Kinabalu meaning a 6 hour wait outside in 34 degree heat as they don't let you in the departure hall to under 1 hour before!

Off to Oz first thing next day... 3 hours to Singapore, 6 hours in Singapore aeropuerto and then about 7 hours to Sydney, Simples!

into Borneo, Malaysia

After Qantas finished shuffling us around, we ended up on a BA flight to Singapore. Maybe it was to get us used to Asian conditions, they had the aircon on "tropical". It was a relief to emerge into the wonderful tranquil cool of Singapore airport.

We overnighted in the transit hotel and then flew to Kota Kinabalu the following morning. From my window seat I could see lots of mysterious coastlines and islands. To help us recover from jet-lag and celebrate my birthday, we had rather ni...

Kota Kinabalu

For those of you who havent heard of Kota Kinabalu, (read: 99% of you), its on an island called Borneo and for those who havent heard of Borneo (read: 95% of you), its a rainforest island, shared by Indonesia and Malaysis, with hot springs, mountains and rivers. I must add that a 3rd country occupies this island, but its so small no one will mind I forgot it: Brunei, famous for one of the largest single collections of Ferraris, Bentleys and Mercedes Benzes...oh and the Sultanof Brunei spends ...

... refuse to partake in. I read a book where the writer put it in perspective. He said if you got **** on your face would you wipe it off with water and your hand or would you wipe it off with a paper towel. I would wipe it off with water and my hand but I don’t care. If in the near future I have an emergency I will squat but I always keep a roll of toilet paper in my book bag just in case.

Disappointing Day

... a gallery about the national parks in Sabah with lots of information.
After finding some $3 ponchos in the giftshop, we headed back out into the rain to head back to our hotel. On the way out, we checked the map again and found that the track we were on was a loop and we were nearly at the end!
The rest of the day was spent lazing about the hotel room while the rain kept coming down, and a dinner ...

Twice as Nice: Malaysia Travels

... to Borneo was fabulous and I would recommend it to anyway considering going. However, our trip was way too short. We didn't get to see the Orangutans, the Probiscus Monkeys (huge nose that look like a penis), the massive flowers, small elephants, Mount Kinabalu or the beautiful sea turtles. Basically, I want to go back and do all the outdoor stuff we missed out on during our short trip. Anybody want to join? Round Two: Peninsular Malaysia About a month after ...

... time only' and 'your very lucky sir', i would be able to get a bed and dinner for 195 ringgit and this would be the very final offer! Still recovering from 'not' getting the deal of a lifetime that the woman believed she was offering, i thought that i was in one of those situations where, at the end of the day, i had 'two choices'! It didn't help that i would still be yet to pay 100 ringgit for a climbing permit, 30r for a national park fee, 80r ...

... amp; Kat! Scuba Diving! Anyways, we organised diving and went to Gaya island for the day to dive with a company called 'down under'. A girl called Clare took us out on our first official dives outside of our Padi course, on our first dive I found it extremely difficult to get used to the breathing again despite the fact that I was fine during the diving course....After moving to a different site and getting a different mask, we were ready to finally go, and I was ready ...

... when the night comes, there are literally thousands of people swarming the little corner of haad rin in koh pha'ngan! The catch for us was the 6am bus we had to catch to get down to Kuala Lumpar! We promised oursleves we wouldn't get too wasted...but how wrong we were!! We managed to crawl in at about 4.30 after taunting some little monkey on a lead, and god knows how someone managed to stay awake to make sure we were about an hour later (I certainly ...

... just before 4pm to collect our bags and were approached by a European guy (possibly French) who was also going to KK with his girlfriend. We all shared a taxi, which cost us all the same as a bus but left immediately and was quicker. A few minutes into the journey the nice taxi driver pulled over to let me take one last photo of Mount Kinabalu in all its glory - the first time we'd seen Lowes Peak from the ground. We had conquered that only 10 hours earlier - wow!
