... Serrekunda. Straight away, it appealed to me as it is accessible and easy to explore solo so we walked through the thick forest full of monkeys, monitor lizards and an array of beautiful birds. Brought up on animals and nature, i never tire of trekking around taking all of this in but after a few days of dubious sleep at the YMCA, we were ready to relax and read NEW BOOKS(-:by the end of an ideal day.

... fun and games ensued as we overlanded all the way down through Koalack and Karang and eventually ended up in Barra, beside the ferry port to take us to Banjul.
Although Senegal hugs The Gambia and a lot of people regard the two countries as one and the same, seeing the scenes of rural life and the totally tropical terrain of this new country emphasised its unique ...

Arriving at our lovely 'luxury budget' abode, we were excited to see an array of DVDs that we found time to indulge in as it has been a while. Despite its status as the BIGGEST, BADDEST city in Africa, Dakar didn't freak us out all that much in the end and in fact we rather enjoyed its bustling vibes and various street sellers ...
... next campement right on the edge of the river. absolutely stunning location! Did some swimming, canoeing and relaxing and not much else! No other guests there so the guides were being overly helpful but overall it was a nice couple of days.
After one night in the wilderness we headed back to the village and stayed for one more night before heading back up the coast to Toubab Dialao. To be continued...

There was an extra hurdle to get through today because, in view of the massive 9 confirmed cases of swine 'flu in the UK (Pop. 65m) the Gambians were taking no chances and took everybody's temperature on arrival. I don;t even want to ...

Baline, Senegal ikono... the rainy season lasts from May until November so it wont be so hot" I remember boasting to people before I left. Did I take into account what this meant? Nope! The rain that greeted us into the country obscured the ridiculously disproportionate length of the runway which I'm told was built by NASA to provide an emergency landing site for their space shuttles should one ever be needed. The Gambia has only a few paved roads, but it does have a role in ...
