... caught a local train to Chamonix proper and checked back into the Grand Hotel des Alps, our original starting point, where we were repatriated with our luggage. The rest of the day was spent relaxing in the hotel and waking the busy streets of Chamonix. Checkout tomorrow and we start our journey to Paris via a B&B in ...

... our way to le Peuty, passing a heard of cows and our first goats. As the day was supposed to be a pleasant hike (14km, 2500ft) and feeling bad about missing the Fenetre d'Arpette the day before, we bumped into some fellow travellers who said they were heading to the col de Balme as well but rather were going via the Chalet de glacier. The high point will be the Col de Balme which is supposed to have a funky restaurant for lunch... -- ...

This morning was an early start (6 AM) to catch the TGV train to Geneva. We had to take the metro to Paris Lyon, where we bought lunch for on the train, and then caught it to Switzerland. It was a bit slower than the Eurostar and took around 4:30. Otherwise it all went smoothly though. Once in Geneva, we caught the tram to CERN, the end of the line, and were slowly transferred ...

... br> The top was really cold, but there were lots of climbers out on the rock and we eyeballed the route on the way up, well signs any way. We found the path and we quickly left behind the lift system as we went over a ridge and down a scree slope, and then started a relentless climb up to a col high above us. The col was full of snow, but the path was above this so we were ok, but as we got higher up and just off the top things changed rather quickly. We were used to the cloud ...
