In Van Gogh's footsteps

Took advantage of the hotel breakfast buffet which was cheaper and had a bigger selection of food then the standard croissant and jam that I saw the day before. And it was the same price! We checked out of the hotel and caught a train to Marseilles and once again had a scenic train ride along the Mediterranean. French trains are so much cleaner than the Italian ones, but not as nice as the German ones (in my opinion anyway). The train was late arriving in Marseilles, but luckily the connectin...

Arles

Woke up and had breakfast at the hotel. It was another French breakfast of a croissant, jam, OJ and coffee. I went to the train station as I was taking a quick trip to Avignon for the morning. Hartley didn't feel like going with me and wanted to hang around and do laundry. We have been washing our clothes in sinks, and he wanted to get clothes properly washed . I made my way to Avignon which wasn't far away at all. Avignon is a lot bigger than Arles and it was nice that the old town was very ...

So much potential

... bit grotty and run down and a bit poor… that does not normally put us off though so not sure what was wrong. The town was under going a fair bit of renovation and rejuvenation work and has a hell of a lot of potential as great place to visit…so perhaps in 5 years that is exactly what it will be. We went for a wander and found the amphitheatre which was like a mini coliseum in the center of town. It ...

And voila.... a river out of nowhere

... over 1.5 million tourists each year as it is the source of a natural spring. It's wierd seeing a fast flowing river and then walking 50 metres "upstream" and there only being a trickle.. and then a bit further and no water... nothing but a big cliff straight up!

The town itself is nestled in a valley and is particularly pretty at dusk when rocks take on the colours of the sunset ...

Rome...?

... the old stone replaced like this. But if it wasn’t done, there would be nothing left to see! Also, who’s to say what is ‘original’ and what is not after so long a time. For a building as old as this, I believe a few renovations have taken place over the years!

Just down the street was the Theater Antique, or Classical Theater. A century ...

Starry, Starry Night

... to wander around this town ad see the exact places that are pictured in famous works. It’s amazing how much closer you can feel to a person just knowing you’ve been to the same places. But of course, 120 years later things have changed. Buildings are gone, skylines have changed, and 20th century influence is everywhere! Not quite as romantic ...

Cher and Gary's trip to France

Believe me you don't want the story but here are a few photos and videos of what was a wonderful adventure for the most part.

The bull running was a random and free event - just next to lovely beach. Camargue horses are breathtakingly beautiful in the wild.

Unfortunately no photos of characterful and cultural city of Arles because only took the camera out one day - the day we went to The Camargue obviously.

Arles - Home of the Gladiator??

We are staying in a country home outside of Arles in Provence (south of France - near Marseille). Why are we here? for the food and the wine of course. So the first thing we do when we arrive is get a tip on a good place for dinner from the owner, the place she recommends is tiny seats a maximum 30 called La Guelle de Loup this was the B&B owners 'fay-vourayt' and we can certainly see why the food was outstanding. I had a foiegrais terrine that was sensational ...

The Last free day, the last free meal, last....

July 24th, 2007 Today was the last trip to Saintes Maries de La Mer for IES Arles 2007. It's kind of hard to imagine the fact that I probably won't see this city or these beaches ever again. We took the 10:00am bus as usual and set up on the beach. The wind was a little bit of a problem today. The sand was whipping each of us in the face and making a little dune in each of our ears. We ...
