... as she slow her breaths and eventually stops again.

I stimulate her, I jog her, then I pick up the bag-mask again and off I go. Puff-puff-puff, come on darling.

Her mother has by now left the room, unable to watch. Her much more stoic father stands in front of me, looking for answers. “She’s tired, she needs some help breathing and I’m giving it to her”. This is the best answer I have for the moment.

... And for the 500 metres or so we could’ve walked, we paid a taxi a hefty fee to get us there.

Perhaps I should explain a little better. Even the Malagasy fear the night here. They fear the day, the pickpockets and the “bandits” as they like to call the street criminals. But at night, it all changes ten-fold. Nothing like dodging down a very dark alley, even in numbers, knowing you just shouldn’t be there. So they don’t.

... as the searing mid-day heat sapped our energy. Anticipating a straight forward 30 km ride along the "flat" roads our hotel manager had described for us, we were soon exposed to the reality of miles of hills. ... lining the roads not apparently doing much of anything except not working. We all appreciate a day off! The crowds started moving more quickly as a rainstorm began. Driving toward the city we passed the giant flooded rice paddies that surround Tana, and are one reason the capital was founded here. The views of the fields and mountains behind are fascinating, and the colorful mud houses covered in plaster are interesting as well.
