... was just an average market selling handmade things which none of us wanted to buy. We return to the hostel to have an early night before our early hike up the volcano tomorrow. Hopefully Leesh gets a better sleep tonight and wakes up feeling better, but the typical Guatemalan fireworks at night in the sky is not helping and either are many of the other guests in the hostel yelling about. This brand new area, built with a very southern European character on a hill overlooking the city is probably the richest part of the country, while just 2km away from there are some of the poorest slums in the country. ... Cypress Valley is very close. A wonderful and mutually encouraging discussion followed. Michael's wife is Panamanian and gave us loads of info on traveling through Panama. Through Michael, we learned of a missionary family from Oregon who are serving in La Ceiba on the Honduran coast. We plan to contact them and hope to meet them and learn of their ministry as we pass through. ...

Semuc Champey was to be our last destination in Guatemala. We had hoped to make it up to Tikal to see some pretty spectacular Mayan Ruins but that trip would have to wait. The next day we travelled to Copan Ruins in Honduras. Overall, we both really enjoyed Guatemala and would definitely consider a trip back here one day in the future. ... the streets is lovely. Most people are dressed in traditional Mayan dress and the buildings are no higher than 2 stories, all painted beautifully, and the volcanoes loom over the city, occasionally sending out smoke and ash. It is an impressive sight.
