Time to Head Home :(

... I like to do it. The Macarena is playing in the background and three American girls are actually doing the dance. Yes, it's really time to head home now. But like I said before, I am leaving on a high note with only good memories of this trip. Well, its all been good minus the sight of three plump Americans doing the Macarena!!! What a last memory to have. Hope you enjoyed all this as well. Now go see some of the world for yourself!!!

We landed in one piece - barely

... and Customs was a piece of cake. Next job is finding a shuttle to Antigua. How hard can that be. Well, there were about 20 peopel outside trying to get us to board their shuttle and we finally went with the one that seemed most legit and paid US$10 each to get to Antigua an hour away.

I will let Leighann fill you in on Antigua tomorrow as we have to catch up on some sleep.

happy mothers day on active volcano Pacaya

... hopped in to escort us down the hill safely so we didn't get jumped by bandits.

In Antigua we freshened up and headed back to Reilly's for a big salad and chips. Most of us were pretty stuffed and had a lot of packing to do before the morning. Lucy, Teryn and I chatted for ages in between sorting our stuff out so we didn't get to bed until about 1am. Teryn had to get up before 4am for her shuttle and me about 7.. Last night in Antigua and it was a good one!
Volunteering in Guatemala: children are the future

"If you have come here to help me you are wasting your time...but if you have come here because your liberation is bound up in mine, then let us work together." - Lila Watson I have been in Guatemala for almost 6 weeks now. I've seen intelligent & hard-working Guatemalans, extreme poverty, discrimination, altruism, hopefulness and hands extended in friendship. It has been joyful work, and ...

Pacaya: "I'm standing on top of lava!"

... t really that excited to go, even while we were driving. I was just sort of like, "This'll be fun." Once we actually got climbing and especially once we were on top of the volcano I was just floored! It was great experience. Apparently this was by far the best day that anyone's gone from our group. Apparently lava like this is rather unusual. Well, I guess it was a full-out river of lava. Maybe that doesn't happen everyday. Dave and I met some great people. Two guys ...

Vaya Con Dios - Anitgua

... awesome experience.)

4. My Host Mum - Cristina, my host mother, is a fabulous cook, an excellent conversationalist, and probably one of the nicest human beings you´d ever hope to meet (even if she does make my 29 year old house mate, Nancy sleep in a Minnie Mouse bead spread). Other volunteers have had bad experiences with their host families. One volunteer, Margo, was even evicted. Not so Nancy and me. Every morning and night were treated to delightful food and ...

Quetzeltenango (Xela)

It took me ages to learn how to say Quetzeltenango. Only to find that everyone actually calls it Xela (pronounced Chela). We waited for a bus here at our hotel in San Pedro. When a bus arrived the driver shouted: "Antigua! Antigua!" which is in the opposite direction to Xela. So we ignored it. Just as he was about to leave, a man ran out of our hotel and told us to get on the bus as it was, in fact, going to Xela. But when we got on the ...

Guatemala City

Today started very early. Stephanie, Brian, and I were up at 3:30am to be at the airport in Raleigh in time for our 7am flight. It was very good of Brian to drive us there. We had no traffic problems and no problems checking in or with security and were at the gate at 6:00am. We were surprised at how many people were going through security. We met Wray in the boarding area. Neither Stephanie nor I had met him before, but we picked him out ...

Semuc Chapan

We went to Semuc Champan for a few days. Semuc is a natural swimming pools. we did an excellent tour of the caves and some river tubing. Semuc was one of the highlights of my trip. The tour was great and I did the highest bridge dive I have ever done off the bridge after the tour.
