Free day wandering Antigua today as we meet up tonight for the 2nd half of our trip. First thing after breakfast, moving hotels and dropping off laundry, next, off to the markets for some shopping. I stopped by the chicken bus yard to check out some of the colourfully decorated chicken buses (remember the redecorated school buses back in Nicaragua?) then headed into the markets. What makes it even more challenging is that Antigua is a very popular city for tourists from abroad as well as local tourists and on weekends the roads become heavily congested, but there are no traffic lights at all in the city centre. Fausto explained some other rules such as buildings in certain parts of the city can't be higher than one story and that all the buildings can only be painted one of ten colours.

It only took about 1.5 hours to walk up and it was fascinating to see areas which had previously been subject to an eruption. At the top the rock was so warm that we toasted marshmallows! A German group had obviously done their homework meticulously as they brought with them sausages, ham, cheese ...
