1715. A Mother's Order

Day 279 1 hr, 3 kms Around a bend and up a ridge where there's a cool medieval structure with its step like triangular facade. Nice spot to take a break. And then something happens that sort of encapsules everything that is wonderful about this part of the world. I'm walking down the street, looking a bit scruffy by my own standards--and looking downright hobo-esque, I'm sure, by Liechtenstein standards, with my backpack and guitar... A woman and her ...

1714. Industry in Liechtenstein

Day 279 2 hrs, 4 kms There are 5 more towns to go, that's a lot to squeeze in in a couple of hours, but I'm going to give it a try. The first is Essen, where I pass a fairly large industrial area. Here I'm reminded that Liechtenstein actually has a very diverse economy--it's not just about banking. In fact, this country has one of the ...

1713. Up the Mountainside--again

Day 279 2 hrs, 5 kms Not all the towns are in the valley. There's one town that's way up the side of the mountain again. Honestly I don't really feel like climbing up there, but as I said, I might not be able to forgive myself if I miss this opportunity to visit every town of Liechtenstein, so up I go, following a road that zigzags up the forest, occasionally trying ...

1712. The Biggest Town

Day 279 2 hrs 3 kms
It's time to continue on. Just down the road is my 4th Liechtenstein town: Schaan which is actually the largest "city" in the country. Not a lot to see here, other than a nice stone Anglo-style church--and a billboard with a Bible verse, and graffiti sprayed over it that says "STOP MISIONERUNE" I take it that means "stop missionarying us!".

1711. A Not-so-special Capital

Day 279 3 hrs, 5 kms As the road winds down the mountainside towards Vaduz, it turns into a touristy trail, complete with a map showing all the towns of the country, a total of 11, almost all of them within easy reach clustered together in the valley. I immediately know what I have to do: parkbench every single one of them. If I don't, I may regret this missed opportunity to thoroughly explore Liechtenstein, for the rest of my life! There's also a ...
