... uprising. The two most celebrated figures are Vasil Levski who was brought up in Karlovo and Hristo Botev who worked as a teacher in Kalofer. Both men are treated as saints. There are photographs of them on the walls of every school. In Kalofer, there is even a chapel to Levski where a lock of his hair is displayed as a relic. Parties of school kids queue to see it. Levski was hanged by the Turks before the uprising. ...

... Romania in Bulgaria using the same crossing as last year, this time I remembered that the crossing goes over a river and the bridge is a toll road.....last year I spent an hour riding round trying to work out why my satnav was trying to take a 400 mile detour....I told it to avoid toll roads!!

Now plotted up in a hotel in Kazanlak, aiming for Turkey tomorrow....

Again my mind pondered on the concept of "nation", “state”, “country” and potentially how negative the consequences of our separation is.

Back to Veliko Tarnovo or shall I call it Bulgarian Durham due to the wonderful Yantra River which meanders brilliantly around the city centre in quite a unique way.

Perhaps it does not have a stunning cathedral but the panorama more ...

... to the Ivanovo Rock Monastery, a 14th century sanctuary which was cut into cliffs adorned with fantastic frescos. The views of the valley below were brilliant and gave my vertigo a test. I seem to manage quite well though.

Apparently, it's all about speaking to your inner child! What a good call that was.

... up a winding path, gasping in awe (within reason) and trying to work out the meaning behind it all. My first thought was 'Freemasons!' but apparently not.

Around the entrance were huge concrete symbols, with gigantic stone stairs leading up to huge closed doors indicating a sealed-off entrance. But very shortly we found a hole in the concrete, which we managed to crawl into by standing on three clumps of stone. One person would crawl inside, careful not to cut their backs ...
