... tuliaisiksi Nadian ja Rahmanin lapsille Singaporeen. Näiden kahden repun lisäksi Antilla on myös pieni vyölaukku mm. kameraa ja silmälasikoteloa varten. Ehkä eniten päänvaivaa pakkausvaiheessa tuotti moskiittoverkon kohtalo. Olemme yleensä aina huolellisesti viritelleet verkkoja kaikilla Indonesian potentiaalisilla malaria-alueilla suurten kaupunkien ulkopuolella, mutta tällä kertaa tällaisia kohteita lienee vain muutama (mm ...

Lapland home of Santa

... a recipe for disaster and always seem to misplace/lose things. So I wasn't surprised to find I had left my passport and my train pass on the No.8 bus. The cursing has well and truly started as I stampede around town trying to find the bus station. This is not easy when everything is in Finnish and when I do find the bus station ...

shades of happy

... But once on your bike in the fresh moist air, you are so grateful for that stupid class, because the sun is just starting to rise over the kemijoki river with subtle splendor, pinks and purples, and somehow the quality of the light is different from anywhere else you have ever been, as though it actually carries colour in it, making the gravel on the bike path glow a warm purple maroon, as if it knows ...

Hello Santa

... about the Reindeer, Sami people, and Lapland in general. We then went back to Santa's village as the light was fading (not really sun set because we were yet to see the sun through the clouds.) We caught the bus back into town. Megan had seen an add for a Buffet place in town that offered all you could eat for a very cheap price, so we went for dinner. The selection wasn't huge, but the food tasted good enough.

the most important thing i've done for a while

... for the past couple of years across Canada were extremely rare anomalies rather than par for the course. I am only 26, and have much of my life still ahead of me, yet I am seriously worried what life will be like in 2025 due to the effects of climate change in Canada, when I will only be 45. I cannot even express how afraid I am for the children that I so want to have... I love this country, its wilderness, its culture, so much - what kind of ...

Zen and the Art of Education

... people seemed to be worshipping Pirsig as a sort of modern day guru (one was his own), but I also found many critical sites, including a great transcript of an interview he gave a philosophy magazine journalist that asked many of the questions I had nagging in my head too. But this phenomena itself is something so new that I still am startled how naturally I do it, only realizing afterward how truly novel it is: Here alone in my flat on a Saturday morning, I can virtually ...

another turn of the wheel

... excited to see what this turn brings. celebrated with friends here by having a sushi and tempura party. the best part about living in a city with no sushi? well, it's a tie: (a) good odds that no sushi = lots of nature. for the past couple of months i have been walking 5 minutes from my flat to the river, putting on my cross country skiis, skiing 15minutes along the river (crossing a "road" where cars ...

pole walking and other mysteries

... suit, as most were. this pole walker was a teenage girl wearing trendy clothes... but with poles. i was baffled. this morning, however, after a gorgeous 10cm of snow fell yesterday evening, and the efficient bike path snow plows had already made their rounds, i began to get a hint of why those poles might not be such a bad idea. the paths, with the layer of packed snow beneath what had been cleared, were absolutely deathly slippery. my life flashed before my eyes at ...
