    ... so in the end they took me to a nondescript bit of pavement and left me. Eventually a bus rolled up to this unmarked area but it had no number on it and no destination and it was only after I asked the driver that I knew it was my bus. It is not a very good system and I was glad that my rudimentary French was sufficient because if I had failed to catch this bus I would have had to wait four hours for the next one.

    ... has Charlemagne living here briefly, in 800AD, to establish the monastery, and reputedly marking out the hills with his buttocks. The walk around the village is the Pied de Charlemagne, literally, his footsteps.

    Finally, locals take kindly to our attempts at French, humouring us and filling in the gaps where even a Franglais word won't suffice.

    Narbonne Aire. Big Commerce sight. Not a Custom services now a Font Bleu that didn't work and it cost €10! Day 1. Having enjoyed an odd break at Treasure Island Camping we were very keen to move on after two days this morning and find ourselves in a very organised Aire in Narbonne. We have a Dutch couple next door, always friendly and Clive is frying up a steak nosh. I'm on the vino! We like this place a lot. It's historically sound being once the capital of Rome's first colony ...

    • Made it through the last lock into Narbonne not without incident.
    • This is a control lock and they wont let you through without your carnet to use the canals, I dont have a carnet because no one could it seems take the money anywhere previously.
    • They dont accept cards, and I had to scrape the cash together.
    • 81.4 € for the use of the waterway from Bordeaux, a bargain indeed.

    While in Madrid, I asked the Train Info counter, that my train schedule had some reserved tickets, but 2 legs of my route, I had chosen to take 2 unreserved trains. The Train person said that it was unwise.....that as soon as I could I should buy reserved tickets. I only had about an hour and a half to do so once I got to this (Narbonne) station....now, remember usually stations have several platforms....so it's anyone's guess were you get dropped off...and ...
